You were right--it is embroidery. I love embroidery too, but I've never been able to work a needle and thread very well, so I'm very impressed that you even dabble in it!

And an obi is the wide band of material that you wrap around your waist over top of a kimono. It's usually tied into a decorative knot at the back. Here's a series of shots showing how the obi is tied: http://www.nijo.co.jp/eobi/musubi.htm

I dunno what an obi is, but what beautiful embroidery!! As a sometime wannabe embroiderer, I'm despairing and jealous at the same time :)
